Quotes about Liberty: Shareable Posts for Freedom’s Sake

The difficulty we’ve faced over the last two years may be unprecedented in our lifetime, but it’s hardly new in the greater span of history. Personally, I think the founders of our great nation would’ve spotted the modern-day threats to our foundational freedom from a mile away.

I recently had the privilege of watching Rick Green’s Constitution Alive series which was thoroughly educational and eye-opening. Revisiting the history (and appreciating it more at this age) inspired me to research some of the following quotes and ultimately decide to start putting the truth out there to whoever would listen.

These quotes serve as warnings about the future as well as a beacon to other citizens who are seeking support in the fight for America. I plan to update the gallery with more shareable quotes as I create them. Suggest your favorite quotes about freedom in the comments.

“The Constitution was not made for a day, nor is it composed of such flexible materials as to be warped to the purposes of a casually ascendant influence.”President John Tyler

Is the Constitution irrelevant in our modern day? Some people act like it. However, the founding fathers were not only a diverse group of independent thinkers, but they came from a variety of classes and backgrounds. The point was to come together to agree on the most crucial safeguards of our free civilization so that everyone was protected from corruption. It’s not only relevant but more critical than ever today.

“The basic premise of the Constitution was a separation of powers and a system of checks and balances because man was perceived as a fallen creature and would always yearn for more power.” — Roy Moore

“Don’t interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties.”President Abraham Lincoln

“The government solution to a problem is usually as bad as the problem.” Milton Friedman

The Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman expressed some wisdom about the pitfalls of government participation. Our nation’s founders wanted to keep government small because they had first-hand experience with, and came to America to escape, overbearing authority. The idea that it’s our government’s job to solve all of our problems is severely misguided.

“There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty.”President John Adams

“Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.”C.S. Lewis

“The more corrupt the state, the more numerous its laws.”Tacitus

“A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.”President Gerald R. Ford

America’s 38th president himself made an appeal against the growing philosophy of civil entitlement. Perhaps he had some foreknowledge about what was coming in our day. Or maybe there were plenty of examples around the world and throughout history that painted an accurate picture of the evil that comes with government overreach.

“Power is, in its nature, encroaching; and such is the human make that men who are vested with a share of it are generally inclined to take more than it was intended they should have.”Samuel Adams

“A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.” — Edward Abbey

“‘Emergencies’ have always been the pretext on which the safeguards of individual liberty have been eroded.”Friedrich August von Hayek

“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell

Who can forget the eerie warning of George Orwell, author of 1984—one of the original dystopian novels and one that seems all too real in current times. What happens to a society when free speech crumbles? Is offense a reason to silence someone? Who gets to determine what is acceptable speech?

“The control of information is something the elite always does, particularly in a despotic form of government. Information, knowledge, is power. If you can control information, you can control people.”Tom Clancy

“The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion.”Edmund Burke

“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”Benjamin Franklin

Too harsh? It seems like Benjamin Franklin had no sympathy for those who valued comfort in the moment instead of demonstrating a little foresight about the transactional nature of compromise. The path to slavery and subjugation is paved with tiny dilemmas of convenience. Those who would borrow your freedom will never return it.

“It will be found an unjust and unwise jealousy to deprive a man of his natural liberty upon the supposition he many abuse it.”President George Washington

“For in reason, all government without the consent of the governed is the very definition of slavery.” Jonathan Swift

“Posterity! You will never know, how much it cost the present generation, to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make good use of it.” — President John Adams
